How many of you ladies admire your Father? Can I see a show of hands? I have both of my arms raised high! I admire my father so much that when I was younger, I wanted to do things just like him. Whenever he was working in the yard, I wanted to be working in the yard. Whenever he was going on a business trip, I asked many times if I could come along. I admired him so much that as he was working in the yard one day shirtless, I ran outside without a shirt on as well…until my mother pulled me inside and explained to me how that’s not something girls do! No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t be exactly like my father, but there is One who is always like His Father: Jesus. In fact, Jesus can only go where His Father goes!
Open your Bibles to John 5:18-24. Jesus had just performed an amazing miracle on a man who had been paralyzed for thirty-eight years! Jesus told him to get up and walk, and he did! The Pharisees were unhappy with Jesus because He was healing on the Sabbath. When the Pharisees began accusing Jesus, He started revealing His authority to them “calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God” (John 5:17b), which made the Pharisees so angry that they wanted to kill Jesus. Jesus didn’t make empty claims. Through John 15:18-24, we will see how Jesus was given complete authority by His Father.
The Son’s Absolute Oneness With His Father
Jesus said to them, “The Son can do nothing on His own accord, but only what He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise” (John 15:19). Jesus chose to place Himself in the hands of His Father. It’s not that Jesus “couldn’t” do anything by Himself, it’s that He “wouldn’t” do anything on His own initiative. Jesus “did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage” (Philippians 2:6). Every moment of every day, Jesus humbled Himself choosing to be obedient to His Father in every circumstance. Jesus was in constant communication with His Father for the next words He would speak, place He would travel to, and person He would heal. Jesus was obedient, Y’all! Even to the point of dying on the cross. These are big thoughts! Jesus proved His claim to being equal to God through revealing some of the divine privileges He has that only belong to God. First…
The Son Is Able To Give Life
“For as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He will” (John 5:21). Just as the Father gives life, the Son is able to give life. John 1:4 says, “In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.” The Father is the sole source of life, and if the Son is able to give life, they must be One. Only God Himself holds life in His hands! We see all throughout Scripture how Jesus gives physical life (Matthew 8:1-4, 9:20-22, 9:27-21). We also see Jesus giving spiritual life (John 3:16, 4:4-26). Jesus was so pleased to give the paralyzed man new physical life…how much more pleased is He that He is able to offer anyone who accepts Him eternal life! We serve a great God, do we not? Jesus not only proved His claim of being One with God by being able to give life just as His Father gives life, but also
The Son Is Able To Judge
“The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son” (John 5:22). I’m not going to lie, this was a little hard for me to think through, but Scripture always explains itself. Why did God give Jesus all authority to judge? So that “all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father.” John 3:17-19 gives some extra insight on what’s being said. God didn’t send His Son into the world to judge or condemn it, but He sent His Son so there would be an escape route from condemnation. BUT, whoever chooses not to believe in the Son has brought judgment upon himself. To be judged by the Son is to also to be judged by the Father.
I don’t know about you, but my brain is pretty much fried trying to wrap my brain around the unity of God the Son and God the Father. We haven’t even talked about the Holy Spirit! After studying this, you can only be left with a jaw dropped at how amazing and HUGE our God is! His ways are not our ways and His thoughts not our thoughts. Each part of the Lord has different roles to play. I’m thankful for the Son because He is one with His Father, He is able to give life, and He is able to judge.
Just as the Son is completely connected to the Father, lets also strive to imitate the Son and cling so tightly to our Heavenly Father that we aren’t able to make a single move until He approves of it. This kind of life isn’t that of a prisoner who has no freedom, but it’s a life of true freedom and satisfaction that only walking alongside the Father can give! It is being a co-worker with the One who created you! As you walk in joyful obedience to God, He will begin to reveal the most amazing journey He has set before you. The coolest part of this journey…come in close…is that Jesus will walk with you every step of the way just as the Father walked with His Son.
Dear Heavenly Father, wow! You are so good! Thank You for revealing Yourself through Your Scripture as You always do. Thank You that You sent Your Son to walk on the earth and die for us. Thank You for being so complex yet so personal to each of us. Help us to walk closely with You as Your Son did to You. Teach us and mold us into the women You want us to be. We love You and praise You.
