Have you ever found the PERFECT outfit? You know, the one you thought would make your life complete? Or the one that makes you feel like a million bucks? When you find an outfit like that, you can hardly wait to wear it and show off your new find! So the day comes, and you wear it with all the confidence in the world, but at the end of the day its just another thing to add to the laundry basket. A few more compliments than usual were given, but the very next morning your wardrobe leaves you with nothing new to wear and only a longing to be cherished again. This world constantly gives us the idea that the things we seek, whether articles of clothing, a new phone, or a flawless image, will solve all of our problems. The truth of the matter is that we are fighting a losing battle because the things of this world will not last forever; however, it is guaranteed that the Word of the Lord will!
As seen in Isaiah 40:6-8, “A voice says, ‘Cry!’ And I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades, but the Word of our God stands forever.”
Isaiah gives us a picture of how we are like the grass that browns and dies with winter; how the loveliness of our flesh is like a romantic bouquet of Valentine’s Day roses left on display all year long. Each day our body is one day closer to its last. It is aging minute by minute whether we like it or not. Longevity and youthfulness are unattainable for us; but, thankfully, God’s Word is not like our dying flesh or an outdated wardrobe. This is evident as Isaiah tells us…
Isaiah contrasts our fading flesh with the enduring Word of God. Our bodies only grow weaker as time goes on. However, that is not so with His Word. Instead of growing weaker, it withstands time. I don’t know about you, but I can’t keep my dark, skinny jeans dark and skinny enough. I am constantly “in need” of a new pair because my dark, skinny jeans just look like a regular, somewhat slim pair of jeans now. No matter how careful I am when I wash them, the dye wears off, the threads stretch out, and they’re shoved to the back of my closet, never to be seen again. Scripture, however, does not get worn out with too much wear! God’s Word stays true, and it does not go out of style. Even as culture changes and people reject God’s commands, His Word sets a clear and unchanging moral standard of what is pleasing to the LORD. This standard will always remain intact.
And it has done just that! Scripture has been validated through fulfilled prophecies and the preservation of the original text. According to Matthew 24:35, even Heaven and earth will pass away, but God’s Word will not. Isaiah also points out that…
In contrast to the withering grass and the dying flower, God’s Word brings the colors of spring, healthy growth, and flourishing. 2 Cor. 4:16 says, “Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.” So the encouraging news is even though our bodies wear out and a bad hair day is inevitable, our inner man can be made perfect daily through the enduring Word of God and the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit within the believer (Ephesians 3:16).
Romans 12:2 tells us to be transformed by the renewing of our minds so that we may prove what the will of God is. Our minds are bombarded by all the world has to offer but can be renewed by reading and meditating on Scripture daily. This renewal allows our minds and hearts to recognize what Jesus has already given us in salvation and what He desires to do in our lives now that we are called His child. In Proverbs 31:30, we see that “Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord shall be praised.” Instead of focusing on all the world offers and the beautification of our outer body, we are to ponder and admire the Lord. God wants our heart, mind, and soul set on eternal things. Clothes are fine, but they will never change your life the way that Scripture can. The Lord longs to renew our hearts. He draws us to Himself through Scripture to show us great and mighty things concerning Himself and to refresh our souls.
So the challenge for you today is to trust that God’s Word is the only unfading thing in this world, and to let God renew your mind and heart daily through reading His Word. He will lead you daily and give you more confidence than any outfit or item could ever supply! He will comfort you, teach you, and satisfy you with His goodness; and your closet will seem so much fuller in comparison.
God, would you help my heart to long for Your Word. May I wake up with a burning desire in my soul to read the Scripture. Please speak to my heart as I dwell in Your presence. May You renew my heart so that any sin would be chiseled away to conform me to Your image. Would You make me aware of those around me today that do not know Your Word so that I may share it.
